Gang attack kills 70 in Haiti.

The United Nations Human Rights Office released a statement Friday confirming that a gang attack in central #Haiticlaimed the lives of dozens, including three infants.

According to the #UN, members of the Gran Grif gang, armed with automatic rifles, killed at least 70 people, including 10 women and three infants, in an attack on Thursday. The violence unfolded in #PontSondé, a town in the #Artiboniteregion, an important agricultural hub about 50 miles north of #PortauPrince, where gang-related incidents have increasingly spread.

The UN further reported that 16 individuals were critically wounded, including two gang members caught in a gunfight with Haitian police. In addition to the fatalities, the gang set fire to 45 homes and 34 vehicles, leaving many residents displaced. The International Organization for Migration estimated that more than 6,000 people have fled the violence.

While mobilized to assist victims, the Haitian Ministry of Health faced difficulties accessing the town due to the volatile security situation. Nevertheless, local institutions have stepped up to provide care for those affected.

Haiti’s Prime Minister Garry Conille expressed his condolences to the victims and their families, condemning the brutal crime, which he described as not just an attack on the victims but on the nation itself. He also vowed that law enforcement would increase its efforts to address the crisis.

Gran Grif considered the dominant gang in the Artibonite region, is led by Luckson Elan, who the U.S. recently sanctioned for human rights abuses, including kidnappings, murders, and sexual violence.

Following Thursday’s massacre, the UN has urged for increased financial and logistical support for the MSS and a comprehensive investigation into the attack. Reparations for the victims and their families are also being called for.

In a message, Prime Minister Conille stated, “To those who spread terror, you will not weaken our resolve. The Haitian people, who have always fought for their dignity and freedom, will never give up their right to live in peace, security, and justice.” #lunionsuite #haitianamerican#haitinews
